Middle Township is a Township located in Cape May County , New Jersey . As of the United States 2000 Census , the township had a total population of 16,405. Middle Township was incorporated in 1798. Subsequent incorporations of Avalon Borough , Stone Harbor Borough , North Wildwood City and Wildwood City have reduce it from its original size. Cape May Court House , Rio Grande and Whitesboro-Burleigh are Census-designated Place s and Unincorporated areas located within Middle Township. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 215.3 Km&2 (83.1 Mi&2 ). 184.6 km&2 (71.3 mi&2) of it is land and 30.6 km&2 (11.8 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 14.23% water. Middle Township borders Dennis Township , Sea Isle City , Avalon Borough , Stone Harbor Borough , North Wildwood City , Wildwood City , West Wildwood Borough , Lower Township , the Atlantic Ocean , and the Delaware Bay . DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 16,405 people, 6,009 households, and 4,218 families residing in the township. The Population Density was 88.9/km&2 (230.2/mi&2). There were 7,510 housing units at an average density of 40.7/km&2 (105.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the township was 85.21% White , 10.86% African American , 0.23% Native American , 1.44% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.66% from Other Races , and 1.58% from two or more races. 2.12% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 6,009 households out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were Married Couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.08. In the township the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males. The median income for a household in the township was $41,533, and the median income for a family was $49,030. Males had a median income of $37,531 versus $27,166 for females. The Per Capita Income for the township was $19,805. 10.2% of the population and 8.6% of families were below the Poverty Line . 14.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. GOVERNMENT Local government The township is governed by a three member township committee the chair of which serves as the mayor. The Township Committee consists of Mayor F. Nathan Doughty, Jr., Deputy Mayor Charles M. Leusner and Susan DeLanzo.
