Michael Mates

He was first elected to Parliament in October 1974 General Election for Petersfield in Hampshire, and has represented East Hampshire since 1983 . He has been a Chairman of the 1922 Committee , and from 1992 to 1993 was Minister Of State at the Northern Ireland Office . He resigned after a scandal involving fugitive businessman Asil Nadir . Before entering Parliament he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Queen's Dragoon Guards .

Mates's son, James Mates , is a senior reporter and presenter for ITN .
