Michael Lyster




Michael Lyster (born 1958 ) in Galway is a sports broadcaster with Radio Telefís Éireann (RTE) in Ireland .

Known to many as the face of Gaelic Games on RTÉ, Lyster has presented The Sunday Game , RTÉ's main television programme covering the All-Ireland Senior Football and All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships ; he has chaired the programme since its beginning in the late 1970s.

Lyster has not just presented Gaelic Games but has also covered a wide range of sports programmes for RTÉ, including:
  • horseracing,

  • motorsport,

  • greyhound racing,

  • athletics,

  • rugby and

  • football.


Lyster has covered seven Olympic Games since joining the station. The first being Moscow in 1980 whilst he working for Radio Sport; later in 1984 he made his television Olympic debut, co-hosting with Moya Doherty on Daybreak LA (RTÉ's first venture into breakfast television).

Lyster is also a keen rally driving enthuasiast which he has done for 15 years, partaking in all the main events including the Cork International Rally where he finished third in 1992 , the Circuit of Ireland Rally and the Killarney Rally of the Lakes.
