Miami Springs is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida and was named after a spring that was found in the area. It was founded by Glen Hammond Curtiss, "The Father of Naval Aviation", and James Bright, during the famous "land boom" of the 1920s. GEOGRAPHY Miami Springs is located at (25.819725, -80.291071). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 7.7 Km&2 (3.0 Mi&2 ). 7.6 km&2 (2.9 mi&2) of it is land and 0.1 km&2 (0.04 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.34% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 13,712 people, 5,090 households, and 3,517 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 1,800.8/km&2 (4,666.8/mi&2). There were 5,286 housing units at an average density of 694.2/km&2 (1,799.0/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.81% White , 2.04% African American , 0.22% Native American , 1.19% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 3.04% from Other Races , and 2.66% from two or more races. 59.60% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 5,090 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% were Married Couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.16. In the city the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males. The median income for a household in the city was $50,000, and the median income for a family was $56,892. Males had a median income of $37,176 versus $30,823 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $22,963. 9.7% of the population and 6.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 9.8% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
