LOCATION Melville is located roughly half way between Manhattan and The Hamptons on Long Island. The Long Island Expressway (LIE) and Southern State Parkway , two of the country's busiest highways and major points of entry in and out of New York City, pass through Melville. Melville is located immediately off of Exit 49 of the LIE. SIZE AND AFFLUENCE Like many towns on Long Island, Melville is an affluent location, with median family income of nearly $100,000 per year, according to 2000 census statistics. As of the 2000 census, 14,533 people resided there. INDUSTRY Melville is home to the U.S. headquarters of several national and international corporations, including Gentiva Health Services , Nikon , Canon , Chyron and the New York City suburban newspaper '' Newsday ''. These headquarters and many other corporate and industrial centers are found on or near Route 110, which runs north to south through Huntington, Melville, and Amityville . The independent New York City metropolitan television WLNY also is based in Melville. HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTICS The hamlet's former name, Sweet Hollow, was replaced by Melville in school records in 1854. The name Melville was selected in honor of Herman Melville . Long Island's tallest point is Jayne's Hill near Melville, with an elevation of 400.9 feet (122.2 m) above sea level. GEOGRAPHY Melville is located at 40°47'30" North, 73°24'20" West (40.791593, -73.405439). According to the United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of 29.3 Km&2 (11.3 Mi&2 ), none of which is water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 14,533 people, 4,930 households, and 3,993 families residing in the CDP. The Population Density was 495.7/km&2 (1,284.0/mi&2). There were 5,141 housing units at an average density of 175.3/km&2 (454.2/mi&2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 89.93% White , 2.06% African American , 0.03% Native American , 5.42% Asian , 0.07% Pacific Islander , 1.04% from Other Races , and 1.44% from two or more races. 3.72% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 4,930 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.2% were Married Couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% were non-families. 15.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.23. In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $92,527, and the median income for a family was $99,881. Males had a median income of $70,972 versus $43,495 for females. The Per Capita Income for the CDP was $41,053. 4.0% of the population and 3.0% of families were below the Poverty Line . 5.2% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
