Tilly was born Margaret Chan in Long Beach , California , and was raised in rural British Columbia , Canada by a Chinese-American businessman stepfather and a white schoolteacher mother. (Tilly is her mother's maiden name) As a teen, she was involved with the Connecticut Ballet Company , as well as the Throne Dance Theatre , and made her screen debut with Alan Parker 's '' Fame '' in 1980. A back injury forced her to give up dance, and she entered the field of acting, appearing in '' Hill Street Blues '', '' The Big Chill '', and '' Psycho II '' before appearing in '' Agnes Of God '', for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for her searing performance. She later appeared in '' Valmont '', '' Girl In A Swing '', and '' Leaving Normal ''. She has also written a novel titled ''Singing Songs''. Tilly has been married twice and has three children. Her first marriage, which ended in 1989, was to film producer Tim Zinnemann , with whom she had two children. She went on to have a son with British actor Colin Firth in 1990, but they did not marry. Her second husband was the much older John Calley , a former president of Sony Pictures . They divorced on February 2 , 2002 . Tilly has not appeared in a movie in any capacity since 1995, having decided to retire after marrying Calley to raise her children. SELECTED FILMOGRAPHY
