The company was originally called ''Richmond Newspapers'' until 1969, when it was renamed "Media General", as the companies media properties grew and diversified.

Media General's newspaper operations originate from Richmond, Virginia , while its television operations are based in Tampa, Florida , its largest market (#12).

Many of the television stations have a similar branding, similar slogans, and a similar appearance.
