Mayenne is a '' Département '' in northwest France named after the Mayenne River .


HISTORY


Mayenne was one of the original 83 ''départements'' created during the French Revolution on March 4 , 1790 . It was created from the Former Province of Maine .


GEOGRAPHY


Mayenne is part of the current region of Pays De La Loire and is surrounded by the ''départements'' of Manche , Orne , Sarthe , Maine-et-Loire , and Ille-et-Vilaine .


DEMOGRAPHICS


The inhabitants of the ''département'' are called ''Mayennais''. The Demonym could be the source of the word '' Mayonnaise ''.
