Mayberry R.f.d.

CBS wished to profit from the enormous popularity of '' The Andy Griffith Show '', which ended its eight-season run in the #1 spot in 1968. The new premise kept the core character of Aunt Bee (played by Frances Bavier ) in the small town of Mayberry , serving yet another widower, Sam Jones, whose character was introduced during the 1967-68 season of '' The Andy Griffith Show '' to ease the transition. After Andy Griffith's character Andy Taylor married schoolteacher Helen Crump, Aunt Bee became housekeeper to Jones (played by Ken Berry ), a Farmer who had recently moved to Mayberry. Griffith appears as Andy Taylor in several first-season episodes, after which it is established that he has left Mayberry . Sam soon found himself elected to the Town Council, and many of the dilemmas which presented themselves were fodder for story each week. In 1970 , the end of an era seemed to take place when Aunt Alice ( Alice Ghostley ) took Aunt Bee's place, and the Ratings began to slowly slip.

The show was very popular, having reached the top four in its first two years. In 1971 , CBS wished to change its image, and subsequently cancelled all of its Rural -themed programming, including ''Mayberry R.F.D. '', '' Green Acres '', '' The Beverly Hillbillies '' and '' Hee Haw ''. (See Rural Purge .)
