Mary Mary

Mary Mary is an American Gospel Music duo, consisting of sisters Erica and Tina Atkins, known for bringing contemporary gospel to a new level of popularity in the 2000s by introducing elements of Soul Music and Hip Hop .

HISTORY

The Atkins sisters grew up as part of a large family in Inglewood, California . Their parents were gospel singers themselves, and the sisters quickly entered the world of church choirs, travelling gospel shows, and some television productions.

The sisters began Songwriting , and gained success in the music industry for their work. "Dance" appeared in the 1998 film '' Dr. Dolittle '' and "Let Go, Let God" appeared on one of the soundtracks for the film '' The Prince Of Egypt '' in that same year. Other songs of theirs were recorded by Yolanda Adams and 702 .

The duo was subsequently signed to Columbia Records and decided to perform under the name Mary Mary, honoring Mary, The Mother Of Jesus and Mary Magdalene . Their first single, "Shackles (Praise You)" became a gospel, R&B, and even pop hit in 2000; it was followed by their first album, ''Thankful'', which was also successful and would go on to win the Grammy Award For Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album .

Their second album ''Incredible'' became the nation's #1 Christian album in 2002.

By 2005, both sisters had become married (to the unrelated men Warryn Campbell (Erica) and Teddy Campbell (Tina)) and given birth to children. Their third album ''Mary Mary'' appeared. "Heaven", the first single from the album, made history and also broke chart records, most notably an unprecedented 9 week run as the #1 record on '' Billboard '''s Gospel Radio chart.

In 2006, Mary Mary achieved some wider visibility in American culture when their 2000 single "Shackles (Praise You)" was performed on the very popular television show '' American Idol '' by contestant Mandisa .
