Always an accomplished Rally driver, Alén narrowly failed to win the 1986 World Rally Championship on a controversial technicality involving events at an ill-fated Sanremo Rally . The reinstating of an initial 1-2-3 finish by rival manufacturer team Peugeot by FISA robbed Alén of the chance of a championship he had formerly celebrated as his. However it has recently been recorded that Alén had indeed won a title of sorts. As of 1977, Alén had won the FIA Driver's Title in 1977, driving the Fiat 131 Abarth. That title alone technically makes him a "World Champion" He drove two races of the International Touring Car Championship of 1995 for Alfa Romeo , driving the same number of races in DTM earlier that year. He also drove in Trophy Andros in 1996 and 1997 . |
