Marina Bay is a Bay near the Central Area in the southern part of Singapore , and lies to the east of the Downtown Core . An artificial bay, it was formed when Land Reclamation created the Marina Centre and Marina South areas, which form a body of sheltered waters of what was once open sea. In the reclamation process, Telok Ayer Basin was removed from the map, while the Singapore River 's mouth now flows into the bay instead of directly into the sea. In contemporary local common usage, however, the term Marina Bay has largely been attached to the developments in the vicinity of Marina Mall in the Marina South reclaimed area, particularly to the eateries found there. Although technically erroneous, this association may have been stemmed from the association of the venue's limited accessibility to the Marina Bay MRT Station , which has served as the main means of public transport to Marina South. WATER MANAGEMENT In 2004 , the Public Utilities Board publicly announced plans to construct a new downtown reservoir by damming the Marina Channel . Known as the Marina Barrage , it will turn Marina Bay and the Kallang Basin into a confined freshwater reservoir with limited access to marine transportation to regulate the water quality. DEVELOPMENT MARKETING On 21 July 2005 , the Urban Redevelopment Authority formally announced that Marina Bay will become the new marketing brandname for the new developments to extend to the central business district in the Marina South area, particularly to the early phases which involves developments wrapping around the bay. These developments has been known by other names before, including the ''New Downtown'', ''Marina Bayfront'', and ''CBD Extension'', as well as names such as ''New Downtown@Marina Bay'' in recent years.
