According to the 2000 census, Marawi City has a population of 131,090 people in 20,375 households. It is politically subdivided into 96 Barangay s. The economy of Marawi City is largely based on agriculture and exporting.


PEOPLE AND CULTURE


The major ethnic group is called Maranao and are predominantly Muslim . The most widely spoken dialect is also called as Maranao. Lately, the Arabic language has been introduced to a subset of the city's students under the initiatives of the Mindanao State University .


HISTORY


The name of Marawi was derived from the Maranao word "rawi" which locally means "reclining" and refers to the lilies that bend northward on the banks of the mouth of the Agus River.. Marawi was formerly a village of the municipality of Dansalan which was established under the Moro Province in 1907 . In 1940 , Dansalan became a chartered city until 1950 when it was inaugurated as a city. It was renamed Marawi City six years later. It was again renamed the Islamic City of Marawi in 1980 in acknowledgement of its 95% Muslim population. As Lanao del Sur's capital city, Marawi serves as the province's commercial, educational, cultural, religious, and political center.


POLITICS


The current official mayor of Marawi City is Omar Solitario Ali since May 2004.
