HISTORY September 1963- First Hotel of the Group " The Mandarin " opens in Hong Kong. 1974- Began its expansion in Asia as the "Mandarin International Hotels Limited" acquired a 49% interest in "The Oriental" Hotel in Bangkok, also a legendary property. 1987- The trademark 11-bladed gold fan logo was born. The company was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1987 under the name "Mandarin Oriental International Limited". On 20 February 1991 , it was listed on the Singapore Exchange . Europe SPECIFIC HOTELS The Hong Kong Mandarin Oriental and Bangkok (The Oriental) locations are currently the most renowned Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group properties. Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong See Also: Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong The Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong is the first and flagship hotel of the group. It opened in 1963 , as a 5-star Hotel located in Central , Hong Kong Island ; Hong Kong's financial and banking district. It has been rated the best hotel in Asia for many years and it's the choice for many diplomats, politicians and celebrities such as Kevin Costner , The Sultan Of Brunei , former Secretary Of State Henry Kissinger , the late Princess Diana , former US Presidents Richard Nixon , Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush , as well as the esteemed members of the business community. This hotel is currently closed for a major overhaul, with a full hotel closure from December 28, 2005 to August 2006, while retaining its Oriental charm and legendary status as one of the world's most recognized hotels. Even after the hotel reopens to the public, the capacity and/or services will be limited, until the hotel's renovation is complete by December 2006. The Oriental (Bangkok) The Oriental hotel in Bangkok, also one of Mandarin Oriental's flagship properties; in service since 1876 and has been a favorite for the elite since the day it opened, including writer and author Joseph Conrad , of the Lord Jim novel. Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London The Mandarin Oriental in London (Hyde Park) is located in Knightsbridge , opposite Harvey Nichols . Its restaurant is regarded as one of the best in London and is usually frequented by film stars and models as well as other celebrities, when they find themselves in London.
