Mallaig, Alberta




Mallaig is a small Alberta Hamlet of 195 people approximately 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton . Its primary industry is agriculture.

The town was one of the many villages founded with the construction of the railroad being built in Western Canada . In 1928 , the town was officially founded. The name was inspired by one of the Scottish workers. The many swamps and low lying areas reminded him of his home town, Mallaig, Scotland .

Today, the rail is gone, now replaced by the Iron Horse Trail , a long, recreational trail intended for All-terrain Vehicle s. The town today is quite small, containing only a few services, a landfill, and a Kindergarten to grade 12 school with about 300 students enrolled.
