The city of Detroit allegedly attempted to falsify reports by harassing the city coroner, Kalil Jiraki, into testifying that drugs were involved in the incident. Jiraki was later fired, apparently due to mental instability and absenteeism. He was awarded $2.5 million in a harassment suit filed against the City. A high-ranking local N.A.A.C.P. member sat on the jury during the trial, adding suspicion to the circumstances surrounding the officers' convictions.
