Malakula Island (coordinates ) is the second-largest island of the Archipelago of the New Hebrides and the second-largest island in the nation of Vanuatu , in the Pacific Ocean region of Melanesia . It has a population of 20,000 inhabitants. It is separated from the islands of Espiritu Santo and Malo by the Bougainville Strait . Lakatoro , capital of the Malampa Province , is situated on its eastern shore and is the largest settlement in the island. It has a maximum height of 879 m. |
