Bill Clinton gives a mention of the town in his Autobiography , My Life STEROID SCANDAL In March 2005 , the town gained national recognition as a few students, one of whom was a member of the local Daniel Hand High School 's back to back state champion Football team, were arrested for selling Stenox , an illegal Steroid purchased in Mexico on a family vacation; those arrested were Chris O'Sullivan , a senior at Daniel Hand, his brother Ryan, a junior, and John Gorman, also a junior, as well as two minors whose names were not released. Although all of the pills were accounted and none were consumed, this particular incident was singled out in national Media for its coincision with Congressional hearings on steroid use in Professional Sports ; The town swiftly responded by spearheading a state-wide anti-steroids campaign, mostly involving the distribution of a Sticker or Patch with the word "Steroids" encircled and crossed out. Sports Illustrated has rated the town as having the "Most Athletic" high school in the state, in an article printed in 2005. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 95.3 Km&2 (36.8 Mi&2 ). 93.8 km&2 (36.2 mi&2) of it is land and 1.5 km&2 (0.6 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.58% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 17,858 people, 6,515 households, and 5,120 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 190.5/km&2 (493.3/mi&2). There were 7,386 housing units at an average density of 78.8/km&2 (204.0/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 96.62% White , 0.40% African American , 0.06% Native American , 1.71% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.25% from Other Races , and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.34% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 6,515 households out of which 39.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.8% were Married Couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% were non-families. 18.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.12. In the town the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 3.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males. The median income for a household in the town was $87,497, and the median income for a family was $101,297. Males had a median income of $73,525 versus $41,058 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $40,537. 1.3% of the population and 0.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 0.5% of those under the age of 18 and 2.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
