M2 is the internal name of the E-mail and News Client built into the Opera Web Browser , officially simply referred to as 'Opera Mail'. Its interface is somewhat different from many other e-mail clients in order to provide better integration into the Opera internet suite. It has Spam filtering (both automated and ''learning'', i.e. Bayesian ), supports POP3 and IMAP , Newsgroup as well as RSS and Atom newsfeeds.

M2 uses only one database for all mail, and sorts the messages automatically into several 'views' or accesspoints. The main database can be accessed by opening the 'Received' folder and specific messages are also sorted by type (e.g., the Mailing List views which hold messages sent to mailing lists; messages with attachments are automatically added to an 'attachment' view). This approach to indexing allows for quicker access to messages. For example a message sent to a mailing list with a word document attached will appear in the ''Received'' view (the main database), in the ''Documents'' attachment view, and in the mailing list view for its mailing list. Additionally this message may belong to one or several user created filter views.

Associated with M2 are Opera's contact manager and assorted PIM components, a simple IRC client, and a 'notes' Panel . The IRC client allow users to connect to multiple servers at a time, giving access to thousands of public Chat Rooms . It is also possible to chat in private and to transfer files between users. The chat rooms appearance can be modified by modifying a CSS file ( demonstration )

M2 supports both RSS , and in version 8, Atom newsfeeds.

M2 can display text and HTML E-mail s and uses the Presto Layout Engine to display HTML. The e-mail client is available as part of the Opera Web Browser and is not stand-alone.
