The M101 and M101A1 105 mm light Howitzer s are intended to be used when the more preferable M198 155 mm howitzer cannot be employed. They are an old weapon, having seen service from 1930 to the 1980s, when the US Army began to replace them.. It is towed to battle, and has a hydropneumatic shock absorber for recoil.The cannon is air-cooled. It is used for both direct and indirect fire. A number of M2/M101 howitzers were used by Yugoslavia and approximately 50 were inherited by Croatia . Yugoslavia manufactured the M101 as the M56, and 100 of these models were inherited by Croatia .
