Louise Dresser

Louise Dresser (born October 5 , 1878 ; died April 24 , 1965 ) was a United States Actress . Born '''Louise Josephine Kerlin ''' in Evansville, Indiana , her first film was in 1922 in '' The Glory Of Clementina '', and her first starring role was in 1924 's '' The City That Never Sleeps ''.

CAREER

She took her professional last name as a tribute to her good friend, songwriter Paul Dresser . Dresser, the elder brother of novelist Theodore Dreiser , was a popular songwriter of the turn of the 20th Century . During the first presentations of the Academy Awards she received a citation of merit. In 1929 she was nominated for the Academy Award For Best Actress for '' A Ship Comes In ''.

She was married twice. To Jack Gardner until his death in 1951, and also was married for a time to singer/songwriter Jack Norworth , which ended in divorce.

Dresser's last movie was in 1937 , when she made '' Maid Of Salem ''.

Died after surgery for intestinal ailment in Woodland Hills CA. On her passing in 1965, Louise Dresser was interred in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California .
