Information About

Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California

Los Felices means ''the happy {Link without Title} '' in Spanish . The name "Los Feliz" actually refers to a family with the surname of Feliz that owned property in the area in the 19th century. It is usually pronounced "Los Feelis" by most non-Spanish-speaking locals.

The neighborhood has historically been home to movie stars, musicians, and other assorted members of the glitterati, although not on the level of and the Ennis House . After a period of relative obscurity, the district was rediscovered by pioneering Gays in the 1980s, and a decade-long period of Gentrification resulted in Los Feliz regaining its position as one of the most desirable areas of Los Angeles. The district's popularity was also boosted considerably by its prominence in the 1996 hit film, '' Swingers ''.

NIGHTLIFE

Los Feliz village is home to numerous restaurants and bars. The Derby, at Hillhurst and Los Feliz and the last remaining location of the The Brown Derby , is a traditional favorite, with swing classes on Sunday nights and a club-like atmosphere on Saturdays. Tangier, just around the corner on Hillhurst, sports trendy decor and a back room for live music as well as a restaurant. Ye Rustic Inn, also on Hillhurst, has a friendly pub-like atmosphere, but don't fee any quarters into the juke box, it's not hooked up. The Drawing Room, across from the Rustic, is a dive bar with popular Sunday night karaoke. The Good Luck is a Chinese themed bar at Hillhurst & Hollywood that offers a comfy lounge area with a decent jukebox that inclues the Harder They Come Soundtrack. Skylight Books is also a great place to go pick up a book or see a poetry reading. Pattaya Bay, a Thai restaurant on the strip mall on Vermont Avenue , has good service and good, reasonably priced food that can be quite spicy if you order it hot. It is also open until 3am.
