He became Member Of Parliament for Wirral after winning a by-election in 1976 . The seat was replaced in part by Wirral West in 1983 , and he was elected for that constituency in that year.

In government he served as a junior minister under Margaret Thatcher , who made him Secretary Of State For Wales in 1990 , shortly before her resignation later that year. He remained at the Welsh Office until 1993 , then Secretary Of State For Employment until 1994 . He was then Chancellor Of The Duchy Of Lancaster until 1995 . He lost his seat at the 1997 General Election .

He was made a Life Peer in 1997 . Lord Hunt has been senior partner at his City of London law firm since retiring from the Commons.
