The R38 and '''R49 Stock''' was built for the District Line in 1938 and 1952 respectively. The R38 stock was rebuilt from war-damaged Q38 Stock in 1950, whilst the R49 stock were built new, and were the first London Underground trains built with the traditional aluminium finish. The final units were withdrawn in 1983, after they were replaced by the new D78 Stock . Three vehicles have been preserved.
