Llwyd, a lord in Annwfn , is an ally of Gwawl ap Clud. He decides to avenge Gwawl's death at the hands of Pwyll by making barren and empty Pwyll's kingdom of Dyfed, and later by capturing Pwyll's son Pryderi and widow Rhiannon by means of an enchanted bowl. Llwyd makes Rhiannon carry the yokes of his horses, while Pryderi had to carry the gate hammers, while they are in captivity. When Manawydan tries to plant grain in Dyfed, his crop is destroyed by mice, which are really Llwyd's attendants in mouse form. Manawydan captures one mouse which is slower and pregnant, and proposes to hang her for theft. This mouse is really Llwyd's wife, and Llwyd takes on the form of three clergymen in succession and tries to ransom her for money. Manawydan, however, will only release her if Llwyd releases Rhiannon and Pryderi, restores the prosperity of Dyfed, explains his (Llwyd's) behaviour, and pledges to take no further revenge. Llwyd agrees to these terms, and turns his wife back into a beautiful woman. |
