SHIP DESIGNATION LEGEND

Freespace 1

Terran and Vasudan ships are designated using a three-letter system. Shivan ships use a two letter system. For Terrans, the first two letters are GT - "Galactic Terran". For Vasudan ships, the first two letters are '''PV''' - "Parliamentary Vasudan". Shivan designations begin with '''S''' - "Shivan". The final letter is the ship's type. '''F''' means "fighter", '''B''' means "bomber", '''T''' means "transport", '''Fr''' means "freighter", '''C''' means "cruiser", '''Cv''' means "corvette" and '''D''' means "destroyer". (Note that this is the same for SuperDestroyers as well.)

Freespace 2

Ship designations are the similar with the following changes:
# PV for "Parlimentary Vasudan" is replaced with '''GV''' for "Galactic Vasudan". This reflects a political change in Vasudan culture between FreeSpace and FreeSpace 2.
# Added designations: J means "juggernaut". '''Cv''' means "corvette", and '''A''' means "AWACS". The GTVA Colossus is a bit of an exception; it should probably be '''GTVJ''' for Galactic Terran-Vasudan Juggernaut. Perhaps the A was substituted for the J to emphasize the alliance that constructed it (the GTVA) rather than the combat role it was designed for. Alternatively, the creation of an official 'juggernaut' classification may have seemed superfluous (at least until the comparable Shivan Sathanas appeared) considering the Colossus was designed as a one-off class of an entirely unique scale.
