LAS PLAGAS (Spanish for "The Plagues") When night-time arrives (starting in "Chapter 2" of the main game), the Plaga parasite may emerge from its host body after the body sustains enough damage or if it gets shot in the head repeatedly. The head of the host may either be destroyed completely and replaced by the parasite, or the parasite may emerge from the mouth/neck of the Ganado. The Plaga then takes control of the remaining body. LOS GANADOS Los Ganados (from Spanish , meaning ''The Cattle'' or ''The Livestock'') are the primary enemies in the game and serve as a replacement for the zombies in previous games. They were once average people who had their free will taken over completely by one of the Plagas parasites. Ganados look like ordinary people, with their only distinguishable feature being their reddish eyes. Ganados tend to hunt in packs and always warn one another whenever they spot an intruder. They attack primarily with their bare hands and all sorts of Melee weapons, such as Pitchfork s, Scythe s and Stun Rods . Sometimes, they might even use Dynamite , Gun s and even Rocket Launcher s against a target, while others might be protected with wooden Shields and Iron Helmet s. Ganados will yell out their actions in Spanish, which can provide a clue on the Ganados' course of action, depending on the player's understanding of the language. There are three main types of Ganados in the game (by order of appearance): Villagers, '''Zealots''' and '''Soldiers'''. The villagers were once peaceful residents of a Rural European community until they were exposed to the parasites. From that point, they became ruthless savages under Osmund Saddler's control. The Ganados' lives look somewhat normal and they have been seen carrying out normal farming tasks. However, grisly corpses found throughout the village suggest that the Ganados are cannibals. The drinking water of the village and the living conditions of Saddlar's soldiers are completely filthy. When Leon first arrives at the village, he is immediately attacked by one of the villagers after questioning him about Ashley's whereabouts. The villagers are underpowered compared to other Ganados, as their arsenal is comprised mostly of farming tools. Upon completion of the game, a series of sketches posing as the background for the credits, served as a chilling flashback of the earlier days of the unnamed Spanish village. What was once a joyful community happily distanced from the modern world, populated with many children and amusement, became corrupt as families turned against one another (suggesting mass filicides, which explain the lack of youngsters during Leon's arrival) after their assimilation to the Los Illuminados cult. It also showed how Saddler once introduced himself as a modern day priest in order to deceive the village. The zealots are members of the Los Illuminados cult and appear in Ramon Salazar 's castle. They're dressed in clerical robes bearing the cult's insignia. The color of their robe determines their rank. The colors are black for the lowest, red for the middle and purple for the highest. The leaders typically wear red, as well as a metal skull helmet, or a goat skull. The zealots are better equipped than the villagers, using a variety of medieval arms. When fighting zealots, Leon gains the ability to use his Suplex melee attack if the zealot is shot in the leg to put him on his knees. The soldiers are members of Saddler's mercenary organization, assigned to protect his island complex. They're the most dangerous out of all the Ganados, as they use powerful weapons to take out any intruder, such as stun sticks. Some of the soldiers are even armed with large hammers and equipped with armor. Notable Ganados
If Leon seeks shelter in a specific house when he enters the village for the first time, the Ganados will call for Salvador to destroy the door to the house. Unlike most other ganados, his body doesn't Disintegrate after he is killed, a trait he shares with some of the Leader zealots in Salazar's castle. He is encountered first in the village "plaza", second, outside Chief Mendez's house. Two more Ganados which look identical to Dr. Salvador appear in the mine beneath Salazar's castle. An unnamed stronger version of Dr. Salvador (known unofficially as Mr. Salvador or Dr. Salvador X by fans) also appears in "The Mercenaries" minigame as a sub-boss in the "Waterworld" stage, who is resistant to even the strongest firearms and wields a double-bladed chainsaw that can decapitate his opponent instantly (he literally runs right through them). Upon closer inspection (i.e., once killed) the weapon is actually two chainsaws wrapped to together ironically by a chain. There is also a pair of female chainsaw-wielding Ganados known as the Bella Sisters, whose faces are covered in bandages. They appear in both Ada's story and Leon's, but are less common than Dr. Salavador. Players only battle them once, if they choose the left path (the right holds the second El Gigante) and in Ada's story (PS2 version only), you meet one of them at the bridge and another at the barn. Beside different appearances, the Bella Sisters and Dr. Salvador are the same.
COLMILLOS Colmillos (from Spanish, meaning ''fangs'') are wolves that have been implanted with Plaga parasites. They act like guard dogs for the Ganado. As such, they can be considered the equivalent of the "Cerberus", or "Zombie Dog", creatures from previous games. They are relatively easy to kill, but some contain a parasite that can grow out of the back and attack Leon. One of their attacks is an unleashing of many tentacles from their back (ripping out of their back), followed by whipping from each one. The second is when the beast pounces on its prey and bites its neck ferociously until they are shaken off. The best weapons to use against them are incendiary grenades or a shotgun. They generally appear to be more intelligent and more aggressive than the Ganados, often becoming a nuisance, even to players with game enhancers. Colmillos only appear during nighttime on the west side of the lake, in front of the village's church and in the castle's garden maze. NOVISTADOR A Novistador is a giant insect-like creature that was created from experiments with human specimens by Los Illuminados and appears to be the Resident Evil 4 equivalent to the Hunter , although some might say it's more equivalent to the Chimera from the first game. Its name is a Portmanteau of the Spanish words ''No'' and ''Vista'' ("No" and "View") and the Noun suffix of ''dor''. As such, the name Novistador can be translated as the "Unseen Creature," but the most literal interpreation would be ''Nosighters'' (which would be written ''Noavistador'' in Spanish). The name refers to the creature's ability to render itself invisible to the naked eye by changing the color of its husk. There are three types of Novistadors in the game. The first type encountered is one that has the ability to turn invisible. The second type is found in the same place but their are completely witheand the third type, encountered later in the game, cannot turn invisible, but has the ability to fly. The only thing that gives away its location are its glowing eyes (which change color intermittently), the ripples it makes when moving through shallow water and the loud skittering noises they make. The player can find Novistadors on their own by drawing a bead on a ripple in space. Novistadors often fight in packs of two to four and have wings attached to their backs. They attack with their claws and spit acid at their enemies, the latter of which, if used as a fatal blow, will leave Leon's skull partially melted to the bone. Leon encounters the Novistadors during certain areas of Salazar's castle, such as the sewers, a storage room, the ballroom (the location of their hive, which can be shot down) and the underground caverns next to the mine. They can be easily dispatched when flying, as any damage whatsoever (even a single pellet from a shotgun blast or a knife slash) will be fatal to them. They're the main source for the green, red and blue eyes that can be attached to a Blind Butterfly Lamp. While it is a common misconception that the rate of drops for green, red and blue eyes is based on the color of the enemy's eye when the enemy dies, extensive research by the gamers has led to no conclusion and Capcom certainly isn't telling, but is known that most of the time when the player has to fight them after killing them all only one will drop the blue eye. GARRADOR The Garrador is a mutated warrior (possessed by a Plaga parasite) who wears equipment resembling those worn by Gladiator s and appears in certain areas of Salazar's castle. Its name either is a deformation of the Spanish word ''desgarrador'' (from the verb ''desgarrar'' tear'' ), or is the word ''garra'' (''claw''), with the noun suffix ''dor'' used to give a "Spanish" feeling to the name. The Garrador is equipped with large claws on each hand, which can extend and retract at will. The Garrador is a very brutal creature who will indiscriminately attack anyone and anything in its path and is usually kept under strong restraint. A fatal blow by a Garrador will always result in decapitation, or a stab in the neck. The Garrador is completely blind, due to its Sutured Eyes . Instead, they rely on their abnormal sense of hearing to track down intruders. However, they can easily be lured in one direction by loud noises, such as gunshots or ringing bells. A Garrador's weak spot is the exposed Plaga parasite on their back, which can be taken out quickly with a powerful weapon. It is possible to shoot through its stomach area and damage its Plaga; take note, though: some Garradors wear armour, encasing all of their torso, excluding their back. ARMADURA Armadura (from Spanish, meaning ''armor'') is a Plaga parasite that has taken possession of a suit of Plate Armor from Salazar's castle, which provides a sturdy defense. They attack with Medieval weapons, such as Broadsword s and Halberd s. They are most easily stopped by shooting off the armored helmet to expose the parasite and using a flash grenade to instantly kill the parasites. They can be defeated by simply applying overwhelming amounts of damage, but this requires either extremely high-powered weapons, or a lot of patience, skill and ammunition. There are two variations of the Armadura: one in a lighter-colored armor, which tends to contain a scythe-tentacle parasite, while the darker of the two will contain a centipede. Blasts to the head from a shotgun or other such weapons will expose the parasite. Ashley and Leon (in that order) will each avoid three attacks from stationary Armaduras that fall apart after attacking. REGENERATOR A Regenerator or '''Regenerador''' is a mutated creature created from experiments with Las Plagas and human specimens. This is apparent when you go into the room to get the Freezer key. You notice a dead human who was trying to be implanted by a Las Plagas. A Regenerator's most distinguishable characteristics are its wide mouth, its pale skin and its bulging torso, due to its many Plagas. They have a superb metabolism that enables them to regenerate lost body parts in a matter of seconds. The most effective way to neutralize them is by destroying the Leech -shaped invisible Plagas within their body, which are only visible to the human eye through Thermal Imaging , or by using frag grenades. Otherwise, they can resist a tremendous amount of firepower before being destroyed (120 of health). They resemble the Heaven Smiles creatures from the Video Game , '' Killer 7 '' and share certain characteristics with them. Regenerators can easily be heard wheezing and breathing erratically, a clear sign of their presence. The Regenerators appear to have either no skeletal system or a very flexible one, as they can stretch out their gangly limbs like elastic to pull opponents close and attack them with their wide, gaping mouth. There are not many throughout the game, except on the island. The first is seen in the lab where you get the lab key, another is seen in the corridor that leds to the freezer, the third is seen in the freezer after you have obtained the infered scope, two are seen in the corridor after you have exited the freezer area, two more are seen in the hall near to where you get on the bulldozer, and the last is seen in an abadoned jail. Iron Maiden An Iron Maiden is a variation of the Regenerator with the added ability to generate sharp spikes from its skin. They are able to latch onto their target and cause devastating damage by embracing, thus, impaling him or her with the spikes. They have a slightly slower walking speed than the Regenerators, partly due to their constant twitching and shivering. They also have no eyes, while their Regenerator cousins have a pair of glowing red eyes. Iron Maidens also have considerably higher stamina than the Regenerators, as they contain more leech-shaped parasites. One of these parasites is on the back of the Iron Maiden and can only be targeted by sneaking behind the creature, shooting a hole through its chest, or shooting off one of its legs, which knocks the creature onto its stomach. They are nearly impossible to kill without destroying all of their parasites and in order to do so requires a great amount of heavy firepower (120 of health). You encounter these creatures in only two different places, one in the lab when you need to get the Cell Key and two of them are located in the pit (garbage) area. DEL LAGO Del Lago (meaning ''Of the Lake'', and can be interpretated as ''Lake Dweller'') is giant aquatic creature that is over twenty meters (sixty feet) long and lives in a lake in the village. Del Lago was created by implanting a Plaga parasite into a Salamander . The creature was awakened from its slumber by Saddler after Leon's arrival. This creature also ate the dead body of the police officer with glasses. Leon encounters the creature as he tries to cross the lake in a motorboat. The creature gets pierced by his boat's anchor and drags him along during a boss fight. To eradicate this creature, Leon throws the harpoons found in the motorboat at Del Lago's mouth, back, or side. There exists an intriguing Del Lago easter egg. By shooting one of the fish swimming in the lake from the boat dock, the player may trigger the creature to emerge from the water and devour Leon. However, in the PlayStation 2 version, Del Lago will react if the player shoots six fish from the end of the boat. EL GIGANTE El Gigante (literally ''The Giant'') are creatures created by Los Illuminados from experiments with Las Plagas and human specimens. It heavily resembles the mythical Troll , in particular, those in the '' Lord Of The Rings '' movies. Standing roughly ten meters (thirty feet) tall, the monsters have tough gray skin that is thick enough to be largely bulletproof. Still, they do feel pain and sufficient firepower will force it to its knees, exposing the Plaga on its back. At this point, one can shoot the Plaga from the ground, although the most effective way to neutralize it is to climb up onto the Gigante's back and directly attack the Plaga with the knife. Despite its singular name, there is actually more than one Gigante under Saddler's control. The first Gigante Leon fights is in a stone pit between the church and the lake in the village. The second time, a Gigante is fought is in the right-hand path leading to the village's Gondola (this battle is optional for the player). The last time Leon encounters El Gigante is a pair of Gigantes (often referred to as "Los Dos Gigantes", literally ''The Two Giants'') fought within a Blast Furnace in the castle. One of these two can be effectively killed by dropping it into the furnace itself, leaving the player with a slightly easier battle. However, it can grab Leon instantly and drag him in the lava if not careful. Each battle becomes increasingly difficult, as each Gigante has tougher skin/is more resistant to bullets than the last. VERDUGO The Verdugos (''Executioners'') are the mutated bodyguards of Ramon Salazar. One Verdugo (whom Ramon refers as his "right hand") is dressed in a red robe; the other is dressed in a black robe. Underneath the robes are black humanoid-like creatures, with an insectoid Exoskeleton and a long tail with a sharp Sickle -like blade on the end of it, which it uses for surprise attacks. (The creatures are similar in build and anatomy to the Xenomorph . Notably, the mandibles on their faces also resemble the Predator or Yautja . They are even sometimes featured carrying spears). The Verdugo's exterior is almost completely bullet-proof at first and can even withstand a rocket (making it more powerful than some Tyrants), but is weakened by exposure to Liquid Nitrogen , leaving it completely vulnerable to any sort of weapon. The Verdugo possesses keen agility and exceptional combat capabilities, making it one of the most dangerous creatures Leon must contend with. Leon battles the first Verdugo in the castle's sewer system while waiting for an elevator to arrive (although it is an optional battle for the player). Leon can obtain the crown jewel after defeating it, which combines with the crown and insignia to form the Salazar family's royal crown. One way to kill it is by first freezing it with liquid nitrogen tanks before using heavy weapons. The other is to shoot it until it succumbs to the bullets, but this way is extremely difficult and is not recommended unless one has the rocket launcher. Slashing Verdugo with a knife shows what seems to be sparks, but it is actually possible to kill it only using the knife, provided Leon has enough healing items. A glitch that involves trapping Verdugo behind a door can be utilized to knife Verdugo to death. Due to the limited number of freeze tanks and its high constitution, it is usually simpler to use a Rocket Launcher after freezing. The second Verdugo merges with a mutated plant along with Ramon. This Verdugo forms the large snake-like head of Salazar's new, mutated body. U3 The U3 (referred to as ''''It'''' by Saddler) is a creature that was created by splicing Gene s from Reptile s, Insect s and a Human into one organism. It goes after its prey with unmatched agility. Saddler sends the U3 to kill Leon while he is exploring an underground cave in the island complex. The U3 is fought in two stages. Initially a centaur-like creature with one tentacle-like arm, a distended, bisected mandible and an enlarged tongue, Leon's weapons are only used to drive off the monster temporarily so as to freely move about in a maze of shipping containers in large suspended cages. Partway through this sequence, an enormous worm-like Plaga erupts from the creature's back and attacks with enlarged, scissor-like jaws. The erupted Plaga, however, turns out to be the U3's weak point. In the second stage, on solid ground, Leon can finally kill the U3. U3 shows its ability to dive underground and burst out, but Leon can still manage to kill it, such as by closing U3 off with gates. |
