SELECT COMMITTEES


The Commons has Select Committee s responsible for overseeing the work departments and agencies, whilst the Lords has them for general issues, such as the Constitution or the economy. Both Houses have Select Committees for reviewing drafts of European directives (enacted as Statutory Instruments under the European Communities Act 1972 ). The Commons has Standing Committees that are tasked with the detailed analysis of individual Bill s. Joint Committee s are sometimes formed, from members of both the Commons and Lords.

There is also the Regulatory Reform Select Committee , which examines subordinate provisions to amend primary legislation as created under the Deregulation And Contracting Out Act 1994 , amended by the Regulatory Reform Act 2001 .

The Domestic Committee s are responsible for the day-to-day running of the Palace of Westminster, including the running of the bars and supervision of security measures.

As well as the Select Committees, there are also the Standing Committees, including the Committee On Standards In Public Life , and the Parliamentary Committees, including the Public Accounts Committee . There is also the special committee of the Intelligence And Security Committee (overseeing the operations of MI5 , SIS , and GCHQ ). It is neither a select committee, nor a parliamentary committee, but reports to the Prime Minister rather than Parliament. It was set up under the Intelligence Services Act 1994 .
