This is a list of fictional commanding officers from the '', with the exception of Sturm, who does not make an appearance in the game. COs in the ''Advance Wars'' series often give their forces advantages and disadvantages. For example, Eagle , who specializes in Aerial Combat , has more-powerful Fighters , Bombers and Helicopters , but weaker Naval Vessels . In addition, COs have "CO Powers", which can be activated after their CO power meter is filled. (Damage dealt and damage taken fill this power meter.) ''Advance Wars 2'' also introduces "Super CO Powers," which are more-powerful CO powers that take longer to charge. Any references to stronger or weaker units or classes of units are in comparison to the baseline set by troops under Andy's command. ORANGE STAR Andy Andy (''Ryo'' in the '', but is still a playable character. He is a mechanical genius, but a very green troop commander; he has to be reminded of even basic things, like how to issue orders to his soldiers. On the battlefield, his units have no strengths or weaknesses, and his CO powers both repair and temporarily enhance his troops. Andy is cloned twice by Black Hole. The first time, Sturm uses a clone of Andy, at the head of a Black Hole army disguised as Orange Star troops, to trick the other nations into attacking Orange Star. This clone is destroyed when Sturm is defeated. In ''Advance Wars: Dual Strike'', Von Bolt creates a second clone of Andy, a more sentimental and short-lived one. Jake Jake (John in the Japanese release), along with '', his first game appearance. He is young and hot-headed, and has a tendency to use a bit too much hip-hop slang (although his demeanor is much more serious in the Japanese version of ''Dual Strike''). Jake's specialty is combat on open plains, and his CO powers give varied bonuses to all of his units. Rachel Rachel, along with '', her first game appearance. The younger sister of Commander Nell , Rachel is a cheery and hardworking officer in command of the Allied Nations (including COs from all the nations, including the defecting Hawke and Lash ). Rachel has a knack for getting the most out of her allies; her troops recover from damage more quickly, and her CO powers can either borrow her sister's good luck in battle or call in ballistic missile strikes. Sami Sami (''Domino'' in the Japanese release) is Orange Star's special-forces commander, and has a romantic relationship with '' but in the previous two games she had different weapons. She specializes in using infantry in battle; as such, her infantry are stronger both offensively and defensively, and can Capture properties more quickly. Max Max is a muscle-bound, direct combatant, and serves as a mentor for '', he is notably the first reinforcement CO to arrive from Macro Land. In combat, he favors direct combat over subtler tactics, so his direct-combat units have an attack bonus, while his indirect combat units have a shorter range than normal. Nell Nell (''Catharine'' in the Japanese release) is the de facto leader of the Orange Star COs, and is responsible for training new COs and making high-level strategic and diplomatic decisions. (She occasionally refers to her superiors, but they do not appear in the games.) She is the older sister of Rachel . She normally holds a supervisory position, but can be unlocked as a secret CO. On the battlefield, she benefits from unusually good luck, and her units often make unexpectedly powerful strikes. Hachi Hachi is the curmudgeonly mentor to the Orange Star COs, and has retired from field duty to operate the in-game store (where the player can spend points earned by finishing missions on unlocking new maps and COs.) While he is not normally one of the COs the player can use (he is retired, after all), in '''' he can be unlocked as a secret CO. In battle, he has a handful of money-themed abilities: his units are less expensive, and his CO powers can make units even cheaper or allow him to deploy from cities (instead of only from factories). BLUE MOON Olaf Olaf (''Whip'' in the Japanese release) is the leader of the Blue Moon COs, and a specialist in winter combat. Before the war in Cosmo Land (the events of '' Advance Wars ''), he left his position as head of Orange Star's armed forces for Blue Moon, his home country. ( Nell , one of his subordinates, was promoted to replace him.) During the Cosmo Land war, he was secretly in league with Sturm , but after being defeated by Orange Star, Sturm forsook him. After learning from his error, Olaf and Blue Moon joined the alliance against Sturm headed by Orange Star in the Macro Land conflict. Olaf's appearance is slightly different between the North American and Japanese releases; while in the North American versions of the ''Advance Wars'' games he has a brown beard, his beard is white in Japanese versions, giving an appearance similar to that of Santa Claus . In combat, Olaf thrives in winter conditions; he doesn't suffer the usual ill effects from a blizzard, and indeed, his troops are more effective when it's snowing. However, they are more strongly affected when it rains. Grit Grit (''Billy'' in the Japanese release) is an excellent sniper, which is reflected upon in his Indirect Units , who have both increased strength and range. Before the war in Cosmo Land (the events of '' Advance Wars ''), Grit defected from Orange Star to Blue Moon for unspecified personal reasons. Nell admits that he once was her boyfriend. He also has a history with Max and Olaf. He is a very laid-back person, much to the chagrin of the pompous and very serious Olaf. In the Japanese version of the ''Advance Wars'' series, Grit features both a Cowboy hat, and was featured smoking a Cigarette in the first '' Advance Wars '' installment. Grit carries a Colt Single Action Army Handgun with him at all times. Colin Colin (''Ewan'' in the Japanese release) is the "new kid" among the Blue Moon COs when he is first introduced in ''''. He is Sasha's younger brother. He is very fond of his superiors, Grit and Olaf, but is unsure of himself and often stutters. As the heir of a large family fortune, Colin purchases units at a discount, but troops under his command are weaker because of his inexperience. Sasha Sasha is the older sister of Colin , and heiress to her family's fortune. She first appears in ''Advance Wars: Dual Strike.'' In battle, she draws on her inheritance to receive extra funds each turn, and her CO powers have money-related effects (either reducing the CO Power meters of enemies based on her money reserves, or giving her money for dealing damage to enemies). YELLOW COMET Kanbei Kanbei (''Kikuchiyo'' in the Japanese release) is emperor and commander-in-chief of Yellow Comet, and a former student of Sensei . While he is protective of his daughter, Sonja , more often she ends up saving him from rushing into dangerous situations or making rash mistakes. He thinks of himself as a modern Samurai , and often talks about duty and honor. In battle, his units are very powerful, but are more expensive to deploy. His CO Powers have very direct effects; they simply further enhance the same firepower and defense. Sonja Sonja (''Asuka'' in the Japanese release) is the chief intelligence officer for Yellow Comet and the daughter of ''. Like Olaf, Sonja's appearance is slightly different between the North American and Japanese releases; she only wears glasses in the Japanese versions of the ''Advance Wars'' games. Her effects in combat vary between games: in all games, her units have increased vision range in '', enemy units receive reduced terrain defense effects. Sensei Sensei (''Yamamoto'' in the Japanese release) is a retired paratrooper and mentor to '', it is revealed that he was once an "unbeatable" CO, and develops a rivalry of sorts against Adder. It is also hinted in ''Dual Strike'' that he and Hachi fought together. Sensei is almost always extremely calm and relaxed, even in the middle of a battle. In '''', he comes back from retirement to help drive Black Hole forces from Yellow Comet. In battle, he specializes in battle copters and infantry, with abilities that boost both and allow him to get extra infantry or mech units from friendly cities. Grimm Grimm (''Kouzou'' in the Japanese release), introduced in ''Advance Wars: Dual Strike'', is one of Sensei 's newest students. Nicknamed "Lightning Grimm," he specializes in overwhelming Offensive Rushes . Grimm is overweight and loves to eat donuts. He has a very dynamic personality, and seems very outgoing. Under his direction, troops have significantly more powerful attacks, but due to poor planning have weakened defense. GREEN EARTH Eagle Eagle is commander-in-chief of Green Earth. He is slightly arrogant, and often clashes with Jess over the best way to conduct a battle. He also has a romantic relationship with Sami and is friends with Drake . In battle, Eagle's air units have superior firepower and consume less fuel per day, but his naval units have weaker firepower. His CO powers allow him to give each of his (non-infantry) units two orders in a single turn, although often with offensive and defensive penalties. Drake Drake (''Mop'' in the Japanese release) is the commander of Green Earth's naval forces and a master of the seas (he was a former pirate). He is a bit of a pacifist, as seen when he often mediates Eagle 's and Jess 's arguments. His naval units are more powerful than normal, but as a result his air units have weaker firepower. His CO Power cause a tsunami to strike his foes' units, damaging them one point and cutting their fuel supply in half. HIs Super CO Power, Typhoon, deals two points of damage. Drake does not appear in the story mode, but a Black Hole-controlled clone of him battles the Allied Nations. Jess Jess (''Hannah'' in the Japanese release) is Green Earth's tank commander. She does not get along very well with her superior, Eagle , and the two often argue with each other. In battle, vehicular units under her control have increased firepower, but at the expense of a weaker navy and air force. Her CO powers replenish her vehicle's fuel and ammo supplies and gives them extra movement and firepower. Her first appearance is in ''''. Her appearance changes slightly between those two games In ''Advance Wars 2'', she is wearing a Green Earth uniform and is toting an artillery shell; in ''Dual Strike'', she no longer holds the shell. Javier Javier (''Bittmann'' in the Japanese release) is a somewhat eccentric addition to the Green Earth forces in ''.''. He styles himself a Knight , down to wearing old-fashioned plate armor into battle, and affects knightly mannerisms, including defending " Dame Jess " (who is alternately amused and annoyed by this) and speaking in an old-fashioned manner. His styled beard and moustache infer that he is most likely modeled after Cervantes' character '' Don Quixote De La Mancha '', who shares the same anachronistic and chivalrous behavior. In battle, he specializes in defense, particularly against indirect attacks. Units under his command are more resistant to attacks from indirect fire (such as artillery or battleship fire), and his units get defensive (as well as offensive) boosts when he captures commnication tower properties. BLACK HOLE Sturm's forces Other than Sturm, who is revealed to be the secret mastermind behind the war in Cosmo Land in ''''. Sturm Sturm (''Herr Böse'' - German for "Mr. Evil" - in the Japanese release) is the founder and initial leader of Black Hole. While he holds a prominent position, Sturm is very secretive; his motives and methods are never obvious, and his face, concealed by a gas mask (reminiscent of Darth Vader 's), is never seen, even at his death. He is a heartless leader bent on victory at any cost, and employs both trickery and brute force to advance his inscrutable agenda. In '' Advance Wars '', Sturm uses troops and weapons stolen from Orange Star in an attempt to stir up animosity among the nations of Cosmo Land against Orange Star. This is in hopes of seizing control when all of the nations are weakened by war. Sonja , however, is the first to see through this deception; she notices that that Sturm's "Orange Star" army attacked Green Earth on the same day that Andy was fighting Blue Moon forces. When this deception is revealed, the warring Cosmo Land nations form an alliance and hunt down Sturm's headquarters and defeat the Black Hole forces. In '', betrays Sturm and kills him before he can carry out his plan. He is an unlockable character in both ''Advance Wars'' and ''Advance Wars 2''. in '''', he is neither unlockable nor playable, and is only occasionally mentioned in the game. This is in contrast with the other COs — even Adder and Flak , who do not appear in the campaign mode, are unlockable. Battle-wise, Sturm has two different forms.
Sturm has no CO Power. (His ''Advance Wars'' CO Power becomes his Super CO Power in ''Advance Wars 2''.) However, his Super CO Power, Meteor Strike, is plenty powerful by itself. It drops a a gigantic meteor (hance the name) on the most expensive cluster of enemy units it can fit in a 5x5 square range. The meteor deals out 8HP damage in both Campaign and Versus modes for both ''Advance Wars'' games; the exception is ''Advance Wars'' Versus mode, where it only deals out 4HP damage. Sturm's units also receive a large firepower bonus. Hawke Hawke is commander-in-chief of the Black Hole Army, and, until the latter's death, right-hand man to Sturm . In '''', Hawke is in charge of conquering Green Earth. He nearly succeeds, seizing half of the nation's land, throwing the failure of his underlings Flak , Adder , and Lash into sharp relief. However, the return of Jess and the will of the Green Earth COs (with some help from their allied nations) ultimately proves too much for Hawke to bear. At the end of ''Advance Wars 2'', Hawke kills a nearly self-destructed Sturm and saves the COs of the Allied Nations in the process. Now the leader of Black Hole, he departs with the remaining Black Hole forces. In '''', Hawke fights under the command of Von Bolt (but throughout the beginning of the game suggested he was the new leader of Black Hole), but questions the use of draining Omega Land of its energy; he also seems reluctant to fight. He slowly uncovers his superior's plot, which almost costs him his life, as he is betrayed by Von Bolt. After escaping with Lash , they defect to the Allied Nations, leaving Black Hole under the control of Von Bolt and his Bolt Guard. At the end the game, when Hawke destroys Von Bolt's life-support chair, the building collapses, allegedley killing them both. (His status at the end of ''Dual Strike'' isn't clear; the Allied Nations COs assume he's dead, but Kindle and Koal are convinced that he is alive.) All units under Hawke gain a 10% firepower bonus. While no drawback is apparent, his CO Power costs two more star than normal. His CO power, Black Wave, costs 5 stars and deals 1 HP damage to all enemy units while healing all of his units 1 HP. His Super CO Power, '''Black Storm''', costs 9 stars and doubles the effect of Black Wave. Lash Lash (''Cat'' in the Japanese release) is a mechanical genius and the head weapons designer for Black Hole that first appeared in ''''. In contrast with her genius, she has a girlish (if sinister) appearance, and takes a child-like, sadistic glee in making devastating weapons and using them to cause destruction. She is responsible for the invention of the nearly-indestructible pipelines and the massive factories they feed, which in ''Advance Wars 2'' make possible the simultaneous invasion of all four nations. In '''', she is responsible for the development of the Black Bomb, Black Boat, and the Piperunner artillery. It is also implied that she had a hand in the development of Oozium 238. However, after Von Bolt attempts to kill both Hawke and herself, she defects to the side of the Allied Nations COs. On the battlefield, troops under her direction take greater advantage of defensive terrain, gaining an attack bonus equal to the terrain's defence bonus (in ''Dual Strike'', her attack bonus is halved). Her CO Power, Terrain Tactics, allows all her units to move through terrain unhindered for 4 stars. Her Super CO Power, '''Prime Tactics''', costs 7 stars and doubles the defensive (and thus offensive) bonus of terrain for her units only, as well as giving them perfect movement. Adder Adder (''Snake'' in the Japanese release) is a sly, narcissistic CO, with a snake-like nature and appearance befitting his name. In ''Advance Wars 2'', he is charged with conquering Yellow Comet, but is defeated by Sonja and Kanbei. He is in charge of directing the other Black Hole commanding officers (save Hawke and Sturm , his superiors) in the field. He has a tendency to lord his authority over his underlings, but quails before Hawke and Sturm. Adder does not appear in '' remained in Cosmo Land, preventing Olaf , Kanbei , Drake , Nell , and Andy from joining the rest of the COs in Omega Land. On the battlefield, Adder's units are the same as Andy's. His claim to fame are his CO Powers, which are the fastest charging in the game. Though many COs have either a 2-star CO Power or a 5-Star Super CO Power, Adder is the only one with both. Both of his CO powers increase movement by one and two spaces, respectively. Flak Flak (''Kong'' in the Japanese release) is an oafish, unintelligent brute that first appeared in Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, and is apparently the lowest-ranking CO in the Black Hole forces. Hawke promoted him up from the rank of private to his position as CO. During ''Advance Wars 2'', he develops a rivalry with Max , since both have the same physique and prefer direct combat over subtler tactics. Flak does not appear in the '' description. As a CO, Flak gives all his units an extra 15% positive luck. However, they also have 10% negative luck, and thus can end up doing less damage then they should. Flak's CO Power is Brute Force, which adds an extra 25% positive luck (50% total) and an extra 10% negative luck. His Super CO Power, '''Barbaric Blow''', adds 65% positive luck (90% total) and 30% negative luck (40% total). Bolt Guard The Bolt Guard are Von Bolt's favored officers, and all three of them are (assumed to be)from Omega Land (and thus first appear in ''''). They are the only ones privy to his secret plans and his identity, and they are charged with carrying out his orders and protecting him. Kindle is the highest ranking Bolt Guard and fights with Von bolt until the very end. Von Bolt Von Bolt (''Herr Volt'' in the Japanese release) is the Commander of the Black Hole army (having taken over after the death of '', the first game in which he appears]). He is an extremely old man, and is sustained only by his life support chair. In ''Advance Wars: Dual Strike'', he forms an army led by his "Bolt Guard" ( Jugger , Kindle , and Koal ), and supplements it by recruiting Hawke and Lash from the Black Hole forces remaining after the war in Macro Land (the events of '' Advance Wars 2 ''). He sets about building Black Crystals and Black Obelisks to drain Omega Land, turning it to wastelands and desert, to power his life-support chair and give him eternal life. He leads from behind the scenes. While Kindle (and possibly the remainder of his Bolt Guard) knows of the full extent of his plans, Hawke remains outside his circle of confidence. Indeed, when Hawke discovers Von Bolt's plan, Von Bolt betrays him, attempting to overwhelm him with a swarm of Oozium. After Hawke escapes this trap and defects to the side of the Allied Nations, the Allied Nations go on to destroy the remaining Black Crystals and Black Obelisks, eventually defeating the remaining Black Hole forces under Von Bolt's command. When Von Bolt is cornered, either Jake or Hawke (depending on which path the player chooses) destroys his life-support chair and his headquarters, (presumably) killing Von Bolt and Hawke both. On the battlefield, Von Bolt's units have an extra 10% attack and defence. Like Sturm before him, Von Bolt has no CO Power. His Super Power, Ex Machina, resembles Sturm's '''Meteor Strike''', but it only deals 3 damage (compared to 8). It does, however, prevent any units it hits from moving or attacking the next turn. Kindle Kindle (''Candle'' in the Japanese release, ''Candy'' in the European release) is Von Bolt's chief lieutenant and the superior to Jugger and Koal (who both seem to idolize her). She has a vain, self-aggrandizing nature, and is willing to do anything to maintain her appearance. Indeed, she is a party to Von Bolt's plan to drain Omega Land, and apparently the only other beneficiary, as she makes comments implying that his plan will grant her eternal youth. After the capture of Von Bolt in ''Advance Wars: Dual Strike'' (the first game she appears in), she rallies the routed Bolt Guard COs and escapes. When Koal asks if they should launch a counterattack against the Allied Nations, Kindle declines, preferring to retire with him and Jugger to a city where the shopping is good. She even toasts the Allied Nations on their victory. In battle, Kindle specializes in urban warfare. Her units receive a 40% attack bonus on properties (cities, factories, airports, seaports, and com towers). Both of her CO powers relate to properties. Her CO Power, Urban Blight, deals 3HP damage to all enemy units on properties and her property attack bonus increases to 80%. Her Super CO Power, '''High Society''', increases her unit's attack by about 3% for each property under her control and boosts her property attack bonus to 230%. Koal Koal (''Chakka'' in the Japanese release, ''Zak'' in the European release) first appears in Advance Wars: Dual Strike and is another one of Von Bolt 's "Bolt Guard." In the storyline he is one of Kindle's vassals, and though he supplicates himself before her, he is quite outspoken and bombastic when it comes to his enemies. Koal often spouts proverbs, and refers to himself as "a warrior and a scholar." In battle, Koal specializes in mobility and has CO powers that recharge quickly, similar to Adder's powers. The main difference is that Koal gets an attack bonus when attacking from roads. Jugger Jugger (''Zippo'' in the Japanese release) is a spherical, possibly robotic or cybernetic, brute that first appeared in ''Advance Wars: Dual Strike''. He has a tendency to use computer terms and act as if he were a robot, but it isn't clear if he is actually a robot or merely a costumed eccentric (he sometimes uses verbal fillers). He is on equal footing with Koal , although it is implied that Kindle views Jugger's human counterpart as an overall more effective subordinate. He uses very technical diction (often for the purpose of stating rather plain things), and is constantly calculating failure for the player, underestimating the power of the newer members of the Allied Nations. Much like Flak , troops under his direction are in theory more powerful, but often make unexpectedly weak attacks, due to his erratic style of command. |
