Lion's Head, (, between Table Mountain and Signal Hill . Signal Hill can be regarded as a low-lying extension of the peak and is sometimes called "The Lion's Flank". The suburbs of the city now surround the peak and Signal Hill on almost all sides but strict management by the city authorities has kept development of housing and so on off the higher ground, which is covered in natural Fynbos vegetation and supports a variety of small animals (cf. article on Table Mountain ). Lion's Head is known for spectacular views over the city and the hour-long walk to the top is particularly popular during full moon. The upper part of the peak consists of flat-lying Table Mountain Sandstone and the lower slopes are formed by the Cape Granite and the Malmesbury formation, which are older (Precambrian) rocks. LITTLE LION'S HEAD Near Hout Bay , about 20km to the south of central Cape Town, is a smaller conical peak that looks very similar to Lion's Head and is called Little Lion's Head. |
