According to an interview by Frank Banfield of Cassell's Magazine in 1897 with Mr Oliver Armstrong Fry the editor of 'Vanity Fair reported that Mr Leslie Ward received a sum of between £300 and £400 for a portrait. A caricature of the late Professor Owen by Mr Ward urged the late Sir John Millais to introduce him to Mr Thomas Gibson Bowles - the founder of the establishment on November 7th 1868 Mr Ward joined the staff in 1873 alongside Carlo Pelligrini known as 'Ape' or 'Singe' where he contributed work for forty years
