Leningrad Oblast




Leningrad Oblast (, of Russia (an Oblast ) located in the Northwestern Federal District and named after the revolutionary Vladimir Lenin . It contains Saint Petersburg , Formerly Known as Leningrad (1924–1991), but is administratively separate from it.

The oblast was historically known as Ingria (until 1927).

The oblast has an area of 84,500 km&2 and population 1,669,205 as of 2002 All-Russian Population Census. Aside from Saint Petersburg, Kolpino is the largest city with around 160,000 inhabitants. Leningrad Oblast managed to retain its name after the fall of the Soviet Union in spite of the city proper Leningrad's change.
