Lemuel Cook ( September 10 , 1759 – May 20 , 1866 ) was the last verifiable surviving Veteran of the American Revolutionary War . Enlisting in the Continental Army at the age of sixteen, he fought in the Virginia campaign against Charles Cornwallis , receiving an honorable discharge signed by George Washington on June 12 , 1784 . After the war, Cook married one Hannah Curtis, who bore him seven sons and three daughters. He died at the age of 106 and was buried with full military and Masonic honors.
