Lehigh University is a University based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania (within 75 miles (120 km) of Philadelphia and New York City ), in the United States .

Founded in 1865 , it is a coeducational, private university offering bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, notably in the arts, sciences, engineering, business administration, education, and philosophy. It has nearly 5,000 undergraduates, over 2,000 graduate students, and almost 600 professors, yielding a 10-1 student-faculty ratio.

When Asa Packer founded Lehigh University, one of his objectives was to provide a well-rounded education for young students that combined a liberal and scientific education with the necessary technical skills to increase the prosperity of the region. According to William Bacon Stevens, the first president of the board of trustees, Asa Packer's founding gift of $500,000 was the largest single endowment for a literary institution at that time.

The school's sports teams have been traditionally called the Engineers. In 1995, the Mountain Hawk mascot was introduced. Their colors are brown and white. They mostly compete for NCAA 's Division I (Division I-AA for football) in the Patriot League , though the Wrestling team competes in the EIWA .

Lehigh, traditionally known as a strong engineering school, is the only university asked by NASA to help investigate the causes of the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. Lehigh also has an impressive performing arts center (Zoellner Art Center) where renowned artists from all over the world perform regularly. The annual gala is typically held in the summer months and attracts a large audience from the local area.

Lehigh is also well known for its business programs, with the undergraduate College of Business & Economics ranked 18th in the nation by BusinessWeek . The business school also ranked 8th in median starting salary. As of 2006, US News & World Report ranks Lehigh as the 32nd best national university. {Link without Title} . It ranks 7th in the nation for overall alumni giving.

Lehigh's students over the years have had a reputation for drinking and partying. . Over the last decade however, Lehigh's administration has been tackling underage drinking and drug use. Although '' The Princeton Review '' rated Lehigh the #3 party school in the country, Lehigh's reputation as a party school is more history than reality.


TAU BETA PI

The first chapter of Tau Beta Pi , the well reputed national engineering society, was formed at Lehigh University in 1885 to honor the accomplishments of those in the field of Engineering. The seal of Tau Beta Pi features brown and white, the colors of Lehigh. Lehigh's chapter is known as the Pennsylvania Alpha.

LEGAL SIGNIFICANCE

Lehigh's significance in the legal world is noted as the catalyst of the Clery Act . In Federal circles it is known as the Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Act. This case was based on the rape and murder of Jeanne Clery in 1986 which occurred in Clery's dorm room.


LEHIGH-LAFAYETTE RIVALRY

Lehigh University's athletic program is notable for its football rivalry with nearby Lafayette College . The two football teams have met 144 times since 1884, making this matchup the most played rivalry in college football.
