Information About

Lee Smith (baseball Player)

Smith played for eight teams during his 18-year career in Major League Baseball . He is the major leagues' all-time leader with 478 Save s.

His reliance on an old-fashioned fast-ball or "smoke" along with the contemporary high visibility of Chrysler Corporation chairman Lee Iacocca , led one teammate to dub Smith, "Lee I-a-''smoke''-a".

Smith was a much better pitcher than hitter, going 3-for-64 (.047) during his career. Interestingly enough, his first career hit was a home run off Phil Niekro in 1982, during one of Smith's six career starts on the mound.
