Lee Krasner ( October 28 , 1908 - June 19 , 1984 ) was an influential Abstract Expressionist painter in the second half of the 20th Century . She was born in Brooklyn, New York to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. Lee studied with Hans Hofmann starting in 1937 . Hofmann exposed Krasner to the works of Picasso , Matisse , and other European abstract painters. This exposure helped to direct Lee's work further and further into geometric abstract work. In 1940 , she started showing with a group of American Painters , helping to establish the Abstract Expressionism movement. In 1944 , Krasner married artist Jackson Pollock , who was also influential in the same movement. She would often cut apart Pollock's old canvases and use them in her own work, as a collaborative effort. Krasner was portrayed by Marcia Gay Harden in the 2000 film '' Pollock '', a drama about the life of her husband Jackson Pollock directed by Ed Harris . She died at age 75 in 1984 . EXTERNAL LINKS |
