Laurence Yep (葉祥添, born June 14 , 1948 ) is an award-winning Chinese American modern Author . Born as Laurence Michael Yep in San Francisco, California , he was the youngest child of his family. Often, he felt torn between both United States and Chinese Culture , and expressed this in many of his books. His first writing was done in High School , for a Science Fiction Magazine . He eventually earned a Ph.D in English and thus began his writing career. The most notable of his books is a series called the ''Golden Mountain Chronicles'', which documents the story of the fictional Young family from 1894 , in China , to 1995 , in America . He won a Newberry Medal for Dragon's Gate and Dragonwings. Other noted are the ''Dragon of the Lost Sea'' Fantasies, and ''The Chinatown Mysteries.''
