Information About

Lands' End

Lands' End is a Dodgeville , Wisconsin -based clothing retailer specializing in casual clothing, luggage, and home furnishing. The majority of Lands' End's business is conducted through their Mail Order and Internet sales, but the company also runs more than a dozen retail operations, primarily in the Upper Midwest .

Lands' End was started as a sailboat equipment company in 1963 in Chicago , Illinois . The business became so successful that they expanded into general clothing and home furnishings, and eventually moved to Wisconsin. The company is named from its sailboat heritage, after Land's End , but the misplaced apostrophe in the company name was a typographical error that the founders elected to keep, as promotional materials had already been printed.

In 2002 , Lands' End was purchased by Sears , who continues to operate the mail order and Internet business, the Lands' End stores, and offers a Lands' End clothing line at their own stores. However, soon after that purchase, K-Mart purchased Sears. Because K-Mart is a low-end department store, Sears has struggled with how to integrate Lands' End clothing into its business because Lands' End clothes are considerably more expensive than most of the clothes sold at either Sears or K-Mart. The company has also struggled with more mundane issues in the integration; for example, one can purchase items at a Sears store with a Lands' End gift card but one cannot buy items from Land's End with a Sears gift card. In addition, many Sears stores do not have Lands' End gift cards in their stores in the gift card sections.

The international shops are set up in the United Kingdom , Germany , and Japan .

Lands' End is famous for its "Guaranteed. Period." policy, which allows for returns or exchanges at any time and for any reason.
