Lanark County is a County located in the Canadian Province of Ontario . As of 2001 , the population is 62,495. Its County Seat is Perth, Ontario 6 .

The county took its name from the town of Lanark in Scotland .


GEOGRAPHY

According to Statistics Canada , the county has a total area of 2,979 Km&2 (1,150 Mi&2 ).


ECONOMY

The county is one of the top centres of Maple Syrup production in Ontario and describes itself as "The Maple Syrup Capital of Ontario".


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2001 , there were 62,495 people, 23,905 households, and 18,090 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 21/km&2 (54/mi&2). There are 27,781 housing units. The racial makeup of the county was 97.70% White , 1.52% Aboriginal , 0.18% Chinese , 0.13% Black , 0.11% Filipino , 0.11% Latin American , 0.06% South Asian , 0.04% Arab , 0.02% Southeast Asian , 0.02% West Asian , 0.02% Japanese , 0.00% Korean , 0.06% Other, 0.05% Multiple responses.

There were 23,905 households out of which 32.54% had children living with them, 32.54% were Married Couples living together, 23.32% are one-person households, and 12.31% are other household types.

In the county, the population was spread out with 19.68% of the population under the age of 15, 11.78% from 15 to 24, 27.39% from 25 to 44, 25.85% from 45 to 64, and 15.28% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40.

TOWNS AND TOWNSHIPS


While the town of Smiths Falls is physically within the boundaries of the county, it is a Separated Municipality and is not under the administration of the county government.
