Lake County is a County located in the north central portion of the U.S. State of California , north of the San Francisco Bay Area . It takes its name from Clear Lake , the dominant geographic feature in the County . As of 2000 the population was 58,309. The County Seat is Lakeport . HISTORY Lake County was formed in 1861 from parts of Napa County . GEOGRAPHY According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 3,443 Km&2 (1,329 Mi&2 ). 3,258 km&2 (1,258 mi&2) of it is land and 185 km&2 (72 mi&2) of it is water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 58,309 people, 23,974 households, and 15,367 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 18/km&2 (46/mi&2). There were 32,528 housing units at an average density of 10/km&2 (26/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 86.25% White , 2.11% Black or African American , 3.04% Native American , 0.83% Asian , 0.16% Pacific Islander , 4.11% from Other Races , and 3.50% from two or more races. 11.39% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 23,974 households out of which 26.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.70% were Married Couples living together, 11.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.90% were non-families. 29.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.92. In the county the population was spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 23.60% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 19.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 97.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.70 males. The median income for a household in the county was $29,627, and the median income for a family was $35,818. Males had a median income of $35,771 versus $24,026 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $16,825. 17.60% of the population and 12.90% of families were below the Poverty Line . 22.80% of those under the age of 18 and 7.30% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
