It is notable for its old military outpost at Bare Island , and for Botany Bay National Park .
Within the park is a memorial place for the remains of twenty-one Australian Aborigine s.

The suburb is named after Jean-François De Galaup, Comte De La Pérouse , where he landed on January 26th 1788. According to rumor, it was the last place that he was seen alive.

La Perouse is one of only two Sydney Suburbs which has a French title, the other being Sans Souci

In 1961 , the last Sydney Tram service ran to La Perouse.
