Kuhmo is a Municipality of Finland and is located in the Province of Oulu and is part of the Kainuu Region . The municipality has a population of 10,630 ( 2003 ) and covers an area of 5,457.58 Km&2 of which 636.65 km&2 is water. The Population Density is 1.9 inhabitants per km&2. Kuhmo was found in 1865 and in 1986 it got a status of 'city'. It has a borderline of 120 km with Russia. Winter War is important event in the history of Kuhmo. During the war Kuhmo was bombarded 48 times and ground battles took as near as 10 km from the center of the town. After the war Kuhmo held its eastern borderline according to the Moscow Peace Treaty thus having continuous border for 400 years since Täyssinä (Teusina) Peace Treaty in 1595. Kuhmo is well known for its Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival which is held annually. The municipality is unilingually Finnish . SIGHTS
