The city lies at the busy Ljubljana - Jesenice - Villach ( Austria ) - Munich ( Germany ) Railway and Highway . The Airport of Ljubljana (in Brnik ) is also very close to Kranj. The former (until 1918 ) Austrian province Carniola (''Kranjska'' in Slovenian ) was named after this city, which was originally its capital, as well as Carnian Alps , now bordering Austria and Italy .
