Kids in America is a 1981 Song performed by Kim Wilde . It was written by Ricky Wilde and Marty Wilde . It appears on her 1981 debut album, ''Kim Wilde'' and was also released as her debut single. It reached number two in the UK singles charts. The B-side of the single was her song "Tuning in tuning on". A remix of the song appeared in 1994 as the third single taken from the Compilation Album ''The Singles Collection 1981-1993''. There was also a remix included on the 2001 Compilation '' The Very Best Of Kim Wilde ''. The song includes the lyric "From New York to east California ", which, while not completely nonsensical, alludes to an area of California dominated primarily by the Mojave Desert . The lyric is frequently changed in remakes of the song. The song was featured in the 2002 video game . The song was featured in an American Idol (Season 5) Ford commercial. The top 7 contestants were regarded as the "kids in America" and brought music advertisements to life.
