Khanty-Mansiysk () is a town in Russia , capital of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District . It is located on the Irtysh River , 15 km from its confluence with the Ob . The population as of the 2002 census was 53,953. It was founded in 1930 as a workers' settlement Ostyako-Vogulsk after the obsolete names of Ostyaks and Voguls of Khants and Mansi . in 1940 renamed Khanty-Mansiysk, town status since 1950 . (In has also incorporated the village of Samarovo, known since the 16th century.) A Bridge crossing the Irtysh was opened in Khanty-Mansiysk in 2004 . The bridge consists of 14 spans and has a total length of 1,315.9 meters. Its main span is 321 m long. Khanty-Mansiysk was the place of the 2003 Biathlon World Championships , and 2005 the first Mixed Biathlon Relay (4×6 km) took place here. EXTERNAL LINKS
