The Canadian parliament had a secret session for the first time since World War 2 in 1979 in order to pass special legislation allowing Canadian passports to be issued to some American citizens so they could help escape 6 American diplomats board a flight to Zurich Switzerland. The Iranians invaded the United States embassy on November 4 , 1979 , after they suspected the US government of aiding the Shah . During the Riot the six Americans managed to escape. They then hid for four days before reaching the Canadian embassy where they met Taylor who devised the plan to get them out of Iran safely. The other hostages were released on the last day of U.S. President Jimmy Carter 's term in office, in January 1981. Ken Taylor later became a US citizen. The details of this plan was not revealed until years later. In 1980 , he was made an Officer of the Order Of Canada . |
