Information AboutKaskas |

The Kaskas (also '''Kaskians''' or '''Gasgas''') are an ancient people of Anatolia , known from Hittite sources. They lived between the core Hittite region and the Black Sea, and are cited as the reason that the Hittite Empire never extended northward to that area. They may have displaced the speakers of the Palaic language. They were continually on hostile terms with the Hittites beginning with the reign of Tudhaliya II (about 1430 BC), and it may be around this time that they moved into the region. Some time between the reigns of Tudhaliya and Suppiluliuma I , they were able to join with Azzi-Hayasa and Isuwa to the east, as well as other enemies of the Hittites, and burn Hattusa , the Hittite capital, to the ground. Under Suppiluliuma (c. 1350 BC) they were beaten back, but continued to be a frontier menace. The Kaskas are recorded to have crossed the Halys River with 800 chariots and again advanced as far as Hattusa in the time of Mursili II (around 1300 BC), however he was able to contain them successfully with a chain of border fortresses. His successor, Muwatalli , was even obliged to move his capital to a different location to the south, after Hattusa was again destroyed by the Kaskas. SEE ALSO |
