is a
Radio Station Licensed to
Los Angeles, California , USA with an
Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio musical format. It is owned by
Emmis Communications . In 2005, it also began broadcasting in
IBOC Digital Radio , using the
HD Radio system from
IBiquity .
KPWR flipped formats from an
Adult Contemporary format(As
KMGG , ''"Magic 106"'') to a
Dance Music -leaning
Top 40 direction on
January 11 ,
1986 . In its first seven years the playlist would concentrate mostly on an upbeat party-styled mix of
Dance Music ,
House , and
Urban Pop product while avoiding anything that had a heavy Rock sound. This mix of music would later be called
Crossover because of the station's musical makeup. The
Crossover term would later evolve into a newer term by the mid
1990s when it was replaced by the new term
Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio .
By
1993 KPWR began a transition from the
Crossover format to an
Urban music direction with
Hip-Hop as the musical base. But by January
2005 it began tweaking its direction by adding non-
R&B /
Hip-Hop artists like
Natalie ,
Baby Bash ,
NB Ridaz and
Gwen Stefani , resulting in ''Power 106'' returning to a
Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio direction. The move may have in response to
Top 40 rival
KIIS shifting its musical approach closer to KPWR's.
Despite having a
Hip-Hop heavy lean, even though they broadened their direction to challenge
KIIS , KPWRs core listening audience is usually geared toward young 12-24s, young females and a heavily young bilingual
Hispanic core.
