ABOUT KBLX The 102.9 FM dial was home to jazz station KRE until 1979 when KBLX was launched as one of the first true radio stations with an Adult Contemporary format. Throughout the 1980s the station played not only R&B, but also jazz and soft pop as well, hence the current slogan " The Quiet Storm " today from years before. KBLX, as an AC station, was the inspiration for radio stations throughout the country for the creation and launch of various adult contemporary radio formats, from New AC (Jazz) to soft rock AC to Urban AC (R&B), the latter which KBLX would later modify its format to years later. Even then for some time the station, under the slogan's moniker, played mostly smooth R&B, rarely playing any uptempo R&B, current or old school, unlike its Urban radio competitors such as now-defunct KSOL, KMEL , KYLD or KISQ . Even when KBLX modified its format to Urban AC in the 1990's, the station continued to play jazz music in rotation -- and this practice of mixing R&B and Jazz songs on radio playlists has occurred on few Urban AC radio stations in some markets. But recently the station has dropped jazz and has gone straight R&B like most Urban AC's today -- playing current and old school R&B, including uptempo old school R&B songs as well to successfully cater to the Black community in the San Francisco Bay Area , since competitor KISQ has a similar format with a more heavier lean towards rhythmic. KBLX is the Bay Area's only commercial Black-owned and operated radio station, by New York City based Inner City Broadcasting, of which also owns sister station WBLS in New York. ON-AIR SCHEDULE
