Joseph J. Roberts




Joseph J. Roberts (born July 14 , 1952 ) is a Democrat who serves in the New Jersey General Assembly representing the 5th Legislative District . He has served in the Assembly since 1987.

Roberts is the Assembly Speaker for the current 2006-2008 session, replacing Albio Sires who stepped down as Speaker at the end of the previous term. Roberts served as the Assembly's Majority Leader from 2002-2006, as the Minority Budget Officer from 1996-1998 and as Assistant Minority Leader 1994-1995.

Roberts serves in the Assembly on the Legislative Services Commission. He has been a member of the Democratic National Committee since 2001 and of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee from 2001-2002. Roberts was the Chair of the Camden County Board Of Chosen Freeholders from 1980-1987. He served on the Bellmawr Borough Council from 1977-1980 and on the Bellmawr Board Of Education from 1976-1977.

Assemblyman Roberts graduated with a B.A. from Rutgers University in Political Science and received an M.A. from the Fels Institute of Government at the University Of Pennsylvania in Administration.
